Mole Trapping for Carter's Creek Station Homeowners

If you're seeing mysterious raised tunnels crisscrossing your yard in Carter's Creek Station, you're not just imagining things. Those are mole signs, and they point to a deeper problem common in our Columbia neighborhoods.

When you see those raised ridges along your driveway or dirt mounds near your trees here in Carter's Creek Station, it's easy to just be frustrated by the torn-up lawn. But I look at those tunnels as a symptom. In my experience as a UT Certified professional, moles almost always show up because a large tree on the property is under stress. It’s a cascade: a stressed tree, maybe from being planted too deep years ago or storm damage, sends out soft, new roots. Those are a buffet for white grubs. The grub population explodes, and the moles move in for the feast. It's a tree health problem that manifests as a lawn pest problem. That’s why simply dropping poison pellets or spraying grub control rarely works long-term; the grubs feeding on those deep tree roots are often out of reach of any surface insecticide.

My approach is a three-part protocol designed for neighborhoods like ours, where properties transition and mature. First, I use in-tunnel traps, placed specifically in the active runs along hardscapes, which are their highways. These traps are buried and flagged for safety, never exposed. This removes the current mole. Second, we address the grub population in the turf to disincentivize new moles. Third, and this is critical, I place a specific bait in the tunnel network. This isn’t primarily for the mole we just caught; it’s for the next one. Moles are fiercely territorial. When you remove one, a neighbor from the adjacent yard will find the empty, pre-dug tunnels and take over. The bait catches that replacement. The real fix, however, takes a bit longer. We need to identify and help that stressed tree recover. Over a season or two, as the tree gets healthier, its roots get tougher and naturally defend themselves, the grubs decline, and moles lose their reason to be there. It’s a process, but it’s the only way to truly end the cycle I see in Carter's Creek Station and across Columbia.
