Why Choose Mr. Lawn Care?

Not all lawn care companies are created equal. Here is why hundreds of Middle Tennessee homeowners trust Mr. Lawn Care with their most important outdoor investment.

UT Certified Expertise

AJ, our owner, holds a University of Tennessee Certification in horticulture — rigorous training in soil science, plant pathology, entomology, and turfgrass management specific to Tennessee. This is not a weekend course. Every treatment decision is based on science, not a generic industry playbook.

Local expertise isn't just about knowing products — it's about knowing the timing, the biology, and the local conditions. If you took me 100 miles east, west, south, or north of here, I'd be terrible at my job for a season or two. You need someone who knows what's going to happen and when in Middle Tennessee.

AJ is also a Tennessee Turfgrass Association member and a Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance (TWCA) member — staying connected with leading turfgrass researchers, extension specialists, and water conservation experts to bring the latest science-backed practices to your lawn.

Treatment-Only Specialists

We do not mow. We do not landscape. Mr. Lawn Care is 100% focused on lawn treatments — fertilization, weed control, disease management, aeration, and pest protection. This treatment-only niche is an untapped differentiator. Homeowners who already have a mowing company actively search for a dedicated lawn treatment specialist.

Companies that divide their attention across mowing, landscaping, and irrigation simply cannot match the depth of expertise that a dedicated treatment specialist brings. We are a local specialist, not a corporate chain.

Local Knowledge, Real Accountability

We are based at 3014 Glenstone Dr in Columbia, TN — not a corporate office in another state. AJ lives in Maury County, treats lawns in the same communities where he shops and eats, and has a personal stake in every result we deliver.

When you call Mr. Lawn Care, you are connecting with a local team that knows your neighborhood, your clay soils, your humidity challenges, and your specific lawn care problems. We soil test every new customer and customize fertilizer rates per lawn — an established mature fescue needs less nitrogen than a new build, and we adjust accordingly between neighboring houses on the same street.

Professional-Grade Equipment & Products

We invest in Z-Spray professional ride-on application equipment for precise, even coverage at calibrated rates. But equipment is only part of the equation. We use liquid fungicides because granular fungicides from big box stores don't have upward mobility — they can't move up through the grass blade to protect the leaf tissue where disease actually occurs.

We use Gold Tag Certified sod-quality seed for overseeding, not the Blue Tag or contractor-grade seed most companies use. We bring more products to every service than any one lawn might need, and we adjust rates based on what each specific lawn requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does UT Certified mean for lawn care?

UT Certified means our owner has completed the University of Tennessee's professional certification program in horticulture and turfgrass management. This ensures every treatment decision is based on agricultural science and UT Extension research specific to Tennessee's growing conditions, not generic industry practices. If you took me 100 miles east, west, south, or north of here, I'd be terrible at my job for a season or two. You need a local expert who knows the timing, the biology, and the local conditions.

Why should I choose a treatment-only company over a full-service lawn company?

Treatment-only specialists like Mr. Lawn Care focus 100% of their expertise, equipment, and training on lawn health. Full-service companies divide their attention between mowing, landscaping, irrigation, and treatments. Our singular focus means better products, more precise application, and deeper knowledge of lawn science. We don't mow or landscape. We are local specialists, not a corporate chain, and this treatment-only niche is an untapped differentiator.

Why do you not apply lime like other lawn care companies do?

Because in Middle Tennessee, lime is almost never needed. We soil test every new customer when they sign up in the spring. Out of the thousands of soil samples we have pulled across Middle Tennessee, fewer than 10 have had a pH low enough to genuinely benefit from lime. Many competitors apply lime as a standard service, but raising the pH of soil that is already in the correct range can lock out nutrients. If a company is applying lime to your lawn without a soil test, they are guessing, and it's unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Why does my fescue lawn need fungicide treatments?

Middle Tennessee sits in a subtropical climate zone. Regardless of rainfall, plants are soaking wet for up to 12 hours per day from dew each night due to our high humidity. Paired with nighttime temps over 75°F, this creates the perfect breeding ground for fungal disease like brown patch and dollar spot. The best fungicide chemistries available only last 28 days, which necessitates a 28-day cycle starting in May and running through August. This is included in our standard treatment plan. Granular fungicides don't have upward mobility, so you must spray liquid fungicides for effective control.

Do I really need irrigation in Middle Tennessee?

Fescue is actually deep-rooted and drought-tolerant — it doesn't need irrigation just for hydration. The real value of irrigation is as a soil temperature control tool. Gravel-heavy soils, especially in boulevard strips and new construction, heat up very fast. Cool water from an in-ground irrigation system can keep soil temps low enough to maintain a good stand of fescue. This makes irrigation a near necessity in areas with gravel-contaminated soil or full-sun exposure.

Why does my lawn need to be mowed tall in summer?

We intentionally keep fescue tall to combat summer heat. It's not neglect. Taller grass shades the soil, reducing soil temperatures and helping to retain moisture. This is critical in Middle Tennessee's transition zone, where fescue struggles during the hottest months. It also helps suppress Bermuda grass, which thrives in the heat but cannot grow in shade.
