While sod provides an instant green lawn, hydroseeding establishes a deeper, healthier root system because the grass grows directly in your native soil from day one, rather than experiencing the transplant shock associated with sod.
Consistent moisture is critical. You must keep the hydroseed mulch damp (but not puddled) until the grass is fully established. Depending on the weather, this typically requires light watering 2 to 3 times per day for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Once the grass reaches 2 inches tall, you can transition to deeper, less frequent watering.
Under ideal conditions with proper watering, you will typically see germination begin within 7 to 14 days. The lawn will usually reach its first mowing height (about 3.5 to 4 inches) in 4 to 6 weeks.
