Mole Trapping & Removal - Mr. Lawn Care

Moles can turn a pristine Middle Tennessee lawn into a minefield of raised tunnels and dirt mounds seemingly overnight. These small, insectivorous mammals tunnel through the top 6 to 12 inches of soil in search of earthworms, grubs, and other soil insects, leaving a trail of destruction that damages grass roots, creates tripping hazards, and ruins the appearance of your lawn. Mr. Lawn Care's professional mole trapping service is the most effective solution for eliminating moles from your property.

Trapping is the only consistently effective method for removing moles. Despite the many home remedies, repellents, and poison products marketed to homeowners, the University of Tennessee Extension and virtually every wildlife management authority agrees that trapping is the gold standard for mole control. Our team uses professional-grade traps placed in active tunnel systems, checked regularly, and repositioned as needed until the mole population is eliminated.

Understanding mole behavior is essential for effective trapping. Moles create two types of tunnels: shallow feeding tunnels that appear as raised ridges in your lawn, and deeper main tunnels that serve as permanent travel routes. Our experienced team identifies active main tunnels and places traps in the locations most likely to intercept moles, significantly increasing success rates compared to random trap placement.

Why This Matters in Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee's moist, loamy-clay soils are rich in earthworms and grubs — the primary food sources for moles. The region's abundant rainfall keeps soil moist and soft, making tunneling easy and productive for moles. Properties near wooded areas, creek banks, or with irrigated lawns are particularly attractive to moles. Grub control can reduce mole food sources, but trapping is necessary to remove moles already established on your property.

Mole Trapping FAQ

Why do you use traps instead of poison baits or repellents?

As a UT Certified Lawn Care Professional, I follow university extension guidelines, which universally recognize trapping as the only consistently effective method for mole control. Castor oil repellents, sonic spikes, and toxic baits are unreliable because moles are insectivores that prefer live prey (earthworms and grubs), making them highly unlikely to consume artificial baits.

How do you determine where to place the traps?

Moles create two distinct tunnel types: shallow feeding ridges and deeper, permanent travel runs. Placing traps on feeding ridges is rarely successful because the mole may never return to that exact spot. Instead, we identify main travel runs—often following a fence line, sidewalk, or driveway—and place our traps there to intercept the mole as it moves between feeding areas.

How long does it take to remove a mole from my yard?

Mole trapping is a process of patience and persistence. While we often catch a mole within the first 48 to 72 hours, it can take longer depending on the complexity of the tunnel system and the number of moles present. We monitor the traps regularly and reposition them based on new activity until we are confident the population has been removed.

Will grub control get rid of the moles?

While grubs are a part of a mole's diet, their primary food source is earthworms. Therefore, eliminating grubs alone rarely forces moles to leave a property. However, a professional grub control application (like our June Acelepryn treatment) is still a critical part of an integrated pest management strategy to reduce the overall attraction of your lawn to subterranean pests.

Are the traps safe for my children and pets?

We use professional-grade mole traps that are designed to be set underground or flush with the surface. When set properly, they are not a significant hazard to children or pets. However, we do ask that you keep curious pets and children away from marked trap locations during the active trapping period to ensure both safety and trapping success.
