Grub & Armyworm Control

Protect your lawn from devastating root damage and defoliation with our preventive grub control and rapid-response armyworm treatments for Middle Tennessee.

Grub & Armyworm Control - Mr. Lawn Care

Subterranean grubs and surface-feeding armyworms are two of the most destructive insect pests for Middle Tennessee lawns. Grubs—the larval stage of Japanese beetles and June bugs—feed on the root system of your turf in late summer and early fall, causing the grass to turn brown and pull up easily like a loose carpet. Armyworm outbreaks, which are becoming increasingly common in our area during late August and September, can completely defoliate a lawn in a matter of days if left unchecked.

Our Grub & Armyworm Control service utilizes Acelepryn, the gold-standard preventive product in the industry. Applied between late May and early July, Acelepryn is completely bee-safe and provides a long residual barrier in the soil. This preventive application ensures the product is present and active in the root zone before the eggs hatch and the grubs begin feeding in late summer.

In addition to preventive grub control, we provide continuous monitoring throughout the late summer for armyworm activity. When armyworms are detected, we offer rapid-response curative treatments using university-recommended products to stop the infestation immediately and save your lawn from severe damage.

Why This Matters in Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee experiences significant pressure from both Japanese beetle grubs and fall armyworms. The timing of our preventive applications is specifically calibrated for the life cycles of these local pests. Applying grub control too early or too late renders it ineffective. Furthermore, our region has seen severe armyworm outbreaks in recent years, making proactive monitoring and rapid-response capabilities essential.

Grub & Armyworm Control FAQ

When is the best time to apply grub control?

Preventive grub control must be applied before the grubs begin feeding. In Middle Tennessee, this means applying products like Acelepryn between late May and early July. This ensures the active ingredient is in the soil when the Japanese beetle and June bug eggs hatch.

How can I tell if I have grub damage or just dry grass?

Grub damage typically appears in late summer as irregular brown patches. The defining characteristic is that because the grubs have eaten the roots, the damaged turf can be easily rolled back like a loose carpet. You will often see the white, C-shaped grubs in the soil underneath.

What do armyworms look like and how fast do they cause damage?

Fall armyworms are caterpillars that can grow up to 1.5 inches long, often with a distinct inverted "Y" mark on their head. They feed on the grass blades (not the roots) and travel in large numbers. A severe infestation can completely strip a lawn of its green tissue in 48 to 72 hours.

Is your grub control product safe for bees and pollinators?

Yes. We use Acelepryn for our preventive grub control, which is recognized as the gold standard in the industry largely because of its excellent safety profile. It provides exceptional control of grubs and armyworms while being completely safe for bees, earthworms, and other beneficial pollinators.

Will grub control get rid of the moles in my yard?

While grubs are a part of a mole's diet, their primary food source is earthworms. Eliminating grubs will reduce the overall food supply, but it rarely forces established moles to leave. Professional trapping is the only effective way to remove moles from a property.
