What you're seeing in your yard is the end result of a bigger problem, usually starting with a stressed tree. Here in Pulaski, especially in established neighborhoods like Willa Valley with mature landscaping, that's the common pattern. A tree gets planted a bit too deep, or it loses a major limb, and that stress triggers a biological chain reaction. The tree's roots soften, which becomes a buffet for white grubs. Those grubs then bring in the moles. They're incredibly soft little animals, but suspiciously small for the sheer damage they cause. They tunnel along until they hit a hard edge like your sidewalk or driveway, and since they can't go through it, they tunnel right beside it. That's why you see those raised veins most along your hardscapes, they become the mole's main highway. The dirt mounds you see, often around trees or shallow rock, are just where they're pushing dirt up and out of their way.

Most folks think if you kill the grubs, you solve the mole problem, but that's not how it works in a control-type way. Moles eat a ton of earthworms, too, which you don't want to eliminate. Even with zero grubs, an earthworm population can keep them fed. More importantly, insecticide can't reach deep enough to kill the grubs feeding on those deep tree roots. That's why my approach is three parts: trap the current moles, apply a grub control to disincentivize new ones from moving in, and use a specific poison in the tunnels for the next mole that will inevitably come to claim the empty territory. Moles are fiercely territorial. Remove one, and a neighbor's mole will find the empty, pre-dug network and move right in. My protocol addresses that takeover directly.

The real, long-term fix means helping that stressed tree recover, which unwinds the whole cascade over a year or two. For now, trapping is the immediate solution. I use completely buried, in-tunnel traps for safety, especially with kids and pets, and I place them in active runs, which are easy to identify along hardscapes here in Willa Valley.
