Professional lawn fertilization service for Nolensville homeowners, delivered by Middle Tennessee's only UT Certified lawn treatment specialists.
If you’re trying to green up a new-build lawn in Nolensville’s hot, shallow soil, you’ve probably noticed the struggle is real by June. Your fescue is fighting gravel mixed in from construction, which prevents deep roots and holds heat. Meanwhile, your neighbor’s lawn service is likely dumping phosphorus that ends up in the ponds along York Road, making the problem worse, not better.
Your lawn in Nolensville fights two battles. First, the soil. New construction in neighborhoods like Bent Creek and the Farm at Nolensville often leaves behind compacted subsoil mixed with gravel. This mix gets scorching hot in summer and stops roots from going deep, which is exactly why your tall fescue starts to struggle and thin out when the heat really arrives in late June. Second, most fertilizer programs are wrong for this area. They waste your money on soil tests for nutrients that don’t matter and add phosphorus that our local soils absolutely do not need.
For turf grass, nitrogen is the only nutrient that consistently matters. Your fescue is always in a nitrogen deficit. My approach is straightforward. I apply the right form and rate of nitrogen in spring and fall. If your lawn still doesn’t look right after that, then we look deeper. But starting with a full soil panel for a new lawn is a waste. I only pull a sample when you sign up so I have a baseline, but I use it primarily to choose the right nitrogen source, like ammonium sulfate, which also addresses the common sulfur deficiency we see here now.
That sulfur issue is key. Since the EPA cleaned up diesel emissions, sulfur is no longer raining down on our lawns. My aggregate data shows it’s low across Middle Tennessee. So, for lawns in areas like Stonebrook, I source smart. Using ammonium sulfate or sulfate of potash gives your grass the nitrogen or potassium it might need, plus that missing sulfur, all in one step. I also apply a small amount of potassium only in late winter, the only time research shows it might help, and I never use the plastic-coated fertilizers that leave microplastics in your soil.
The most important fertilization happens in fall. Half of your lawn’s annual nitrogen should go down then, because fall root growth is double that of spring. This builds the root system and carbohydrate storage your lawn needs to survive the next summer’s heat, especially crucial in our shallow, gravelly soils. Come spring, nitrogen mainly fuels top growth, meaning more mowing for you. By focusing on fall and using the right sources, we build a lawn that’s resilient, green, and doesn’t contribute to the algae blooms in your community ponds.
Middle Tennessee's heavy clay soils and slightly alkaline pH create unique nutritional challenges for fescue lawns. High potassium levels are common, but nitrogen and phosphorus must be carefully managed. The transition zone climate requires specific timing—lighter summer feeding to prevent heat stress and heavy fall feeding for root development. Our program is built specifically around these local soil and climate realities.

No, you do not need a soil test just to apply fertilizer. For turf grass, nitrogen is the primary driver. I pull a sample at signup to have a baseline, but we only use it to troubleshoot if a problem persists after correcting mowing, irrigation, and a proper nitrogen plan.
It’s likely the soil. Builders often use subsoil mixed with gravel, which heats up quickly and prevents deep rooting. Your lawn needs significantly more nitrogen to establish than an older lawn. I adjust rates on the spot for properties like yours to force thicker growth and deeper roots.
Absolutely. Most fertilizers contain phosphorus, which our Middle Tennessee soils are already saturated with. That excess phosphorus runs off into drains and ponds, feeding algae blooms. I use zero phosphorus in my programs unless a visual deficiency is confirmed, which is extremely rare.
I strongly advise against it. These almost always contain 2,4-D, and the legal limit is two blanket applications per year. Most homeowners unknowingly apply it four or five times by using different products, which can harm your lawn. They also contain the wrong fertilizer forms for our climate and soils.
