My solution is a process, not a product. When we overseed at The Grove, it starts with selecting the right seed. I don't use a generic blend. Each year, I analyze NTEP trial data from sites like Mississippi and Knoxville to choose three cultivars: one excelling in spring green-up, one bred for summer drought and heat tolerance, and one for fall vigor and disease resistance. This three-season blend, combined with 10% specific Kentucky bluegrass for self-repair and disease resistance, is mixed at 90% turf-type tall fescue to 10% Kentucky bluegrass. This is the exact "sod quality" ratio used by farms, ensuring a seamless blend with any existing sod in your lawn. The seeding itself is done with a metered drop seeder integrated into my aerator. This places seed directly into the holes, preventing waste on driveways and ensuring perfect seed-to-soil contact for uniform germination. I use a 45-degree diamond aeration pattern to create more holes per square foot than the standard method, which is critical for germination in our challenging soils. The seed I use is Sod Quality Certified (Gold Tag), meaning it has undergone rigorous third-party inspections and has zero tolerance for noxious weeds like dallisgrass. We time this for late summer or very early fall because seed needs to germinate and establish before it exhausts the resources in its seed pod.
