Mole Trapping for Yorktown Homeowners

If you’re finding raised tunnels snaking along your sidewalks and dirt mounds appearing around your mature trees in Yorktown, you’ve got moles. It’s a particular frustration in Franklin’s established neighborhoods.

What you see on the surface are raised lines of grass or small piles of dirt. In Yorktown, with its mature trees and deep root systems, these signs point to a deeper issue. Those tunnels along your driveway or pool deck are the most active because when a mole hits that concrete edge, it has no choice but to tunnel right beside it. The dirt mounds you see near your trees are a distress signal, but not from your lawn. Nine times out of ten, moles show up because a nearby tree is under stress from being planted too deep or from storm damage. That stressed tree converts its deep roots into soft, easily digested food, which causes a boom in white grub populations. Moles then move in for the grub buffet. Simply killing grubs won’t solve it, as insecticide can’t reach the deep roots they’re feeding on, and moles also eat plenty of earthworms.

My three-part protocol tackles the immediate problem and the root cause. First, I trap the current moles using in-tunnel traps buried for safety, placing flags so I know where they are. Second, I apply a grub control to disincentivize new moles. Third, I use a specific poison in the empty tunnel network. This last step is critical because moles are fiercely territorial. Removing your mole leaves a vacant, pre-dug highway. A mole from your neighbor’s yard will find it and move right in. The poison in the tunnels catches that next invader. The long-term fix for a Yorktown property, however, involves correcting the health of that stressed tree. Over a year or two, as the tree recovers and its roots toughen up, the grub population declines and moles lose their incentive. I see this pattern often in Franklin’s older areas where beautiful, established landscapes have hidden issues. Forget sonic spikes or castor oil; they don’t work. Effective control requires addressing the animal, the food source, and the vacant territory all at once.
