Mole Trapping for Cottonwood Estates Homeowners
If you're seeing the telltale raised tunnels along your sidewalks and dirt mounds around your trees here in Cottonwood Estates, you're not alone. That's the handiwork of moles, and in our neighborhood, it usually points to a deeper issue with your landscape.
Here in Grassland, and specifically in an established neighborhood like Cottonwood Estates with mature trees and irrigation, mole activity is a common frustration. You'll see those surface tunnels most often pressed up against your driveway, sidewalks, or pool deck, moles hit that hard edge and tunnel right alongside it. Those become their highways. The dirt mounds you find, especially around trees, are their way of pushing soil up when they hit an obstruction like a rock or root below. Everyone searches online and finds the same answer: moles are there for grubs. While that's technically true, it misses the real root cause, especially for a neighborhood of this age and caliber. In my experience, moles show up in Cottonwood Estates almost always because a large tree nearby is stressed. Maybe it was planted too deep during construction, or it lost a major limb. That stressed tree converts its deep roots to soft, digestible food, which becomes a buffet for white grubs. The grub population explodes, and the moles move in for the feast. This is why just killing the mole rarely works for long. They're territorial. Remove one, and a neighbor's mole will find the empty, pre-dug tunnel network and take it over, sometimes within weeks.
That's why my approach is a three-part protocol, not a one-time trap. First, I trap the existing moles using in-tunnel, horizontal traps that are buried for safety and flagged so I know where they are. I find the active runs, often by identifying tunnels that cross mower tracks or, reliably, any tunnel right against your hardscape. Second, we address the grub population to disincentivize new moles. But crucially, I also use a poison in the abandoned tunnel network. This isn't for the mole we just caught; it's for the next one that will inevitably come to claim the vacant territory. The long-term fix, however, involves looking at your property's tree health. By correcting stressed trees over time, the roots toughen up, grubs decline, and moles lose their incentive. You can't just spray your way out of this; grub control alone won't work because those grubs are often feeding on deep tree roots where insecticide can't reach. In a place like Cottonwood Estates, with its valued trees and landscapes, understanding and breaking this cycle is the only way to get lasting results.
