About Red Thread
Red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis) looks really cool in the morning dew — the red and pink thread-like strands extending from leaf blade tips are genuinely photogenic. But despite the dramatic appearance, red thread is typically not a serious plant health issue in Middle Tennessee fescue lawns. Red thread is active in late spring, and at that time of year fescue has so much growth energy behind it that the plant simply grows through the damage faster than the disease can cause lasting harm. The window in which red thread is active in our climate zone is very short — a few weeks at most — and even without any treatment, the grass outpaces it. We do not treat red thread with a dedicated fungicide application. If it shows up in May or June, the fungicides already being applied as part of the brown patch and dollar spot prevention program will address it as a side benefit. But we are not going to add another chemistry or product visit specifically for red thread — from an integrated pest management standpoint, the pest pressure does not justify the input. The simple fix if red thread is visually bothersome: put down a little more nitrogen. Red thread is often an indicator of nitrogen deficiency in the soil. The pathogen thrives where grass is underfed and growing slowly. A modest nitrogen application promotes faster fescue growth, which outcompetes the disease and makes it disappear within a week or two. If you see red thread in your Middle Tennessee lawn, the takeaway is: do not panic, do not call an emergency service, and do not buy fungicide at the hardware store. It is not going to kill your grass. A small nitrogen boost handles it if it bothers you visually.
