About Dandelion
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is the most universally recognized weed in the world — everyone knows the yellow flower and the white seed puff. What most people do not realize is that when dandelion is not producing a flower, it can look quite different. The rosette of toothed leaves sitting flat against the ground gets confused with prickly lettuce and even plantain by homeowners who are not looking closely. Dandelions correlate with soil compaction. Even when comparing two untreated, unmanaged yards side by side, the one with more compacted soil will have more dandelions. This makes them a useful visual indicator — if you see a lot of dandelions, your soil probably needs aeration more than herbicide. Dandelion is one of the few weeds with a legitimate organic control method. It is highly susceptible to iron toxicity, and there are iron-based products specifically labeled as selective broadleaf herbicides (not as a plant micronutrient, but as a weed killer). For homeowners who want a truly chemical-free approach, iron-based dandelion control is real and effective — unlike most organic weed control claims, which are marketing fiction. With conventional broadleaf-selective herbicides, dandelion is in the easy-to-control category — same tier as plantain, henbit, and chickweed. One application at the right rate when the plant is actively growing handles it. Dandelion is leagues apart from the actually-difficult perennial weeds like dallisgrass, nutsedge, Virginia buttonweed, and wild violets that require multi-year strategies.
